Ottawa University Online

Regular attendance in class is expected of all students. A student's final grade may be negatively affected due to absences as outlined in the course syllabus. Instructors take attendance through the My Ottawa portal. Attendance is monitored by a designee of the Office of the Registrar and reported to the student's advisors. Completion of all coursework is the obligation of each student. Excused absences because of illness, family emergencies, or Ottawa University sponsored activities do not excuse the student from required coursework. Students are responsible for reporting expected absences to their instructors prior to class.  Consecutive absences may result in the student being administratively withdrawn from the course.

Due to the nature of online study, attendance is recorded based on participation in an academically-related activity within each week of the term.  Academically-related activity is defined as:

  • Posting in the Course Discussion section during the week
  • Posting in the Course Café during the week (posting should be course content related)
  • Turning in a weekly assignment
  • Taking an exam during the week
  • Any email sent to the instructor dealing with course content during the week

The following are not considered to be academically-related activities:

  • Logging into an online class without active participation; or
  • Participating in academic counseling or advisement.
