Professional Education Requirements for Secondary Licensure

Professional Education

 

All students seeking secondary licensure must complete the following professional education requirements in addition to their content area.  Students must have a minimum of 30 semester credit hours in their content area.  Fingerprint clearance and passing of the appropriate Arizona Educator Proficiency Assessments (AEPA) are also required for licensure.

Ottawa University and Mesa Community College have created a partnership to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Music.  The degree will prepare its graduate to teach music at the secondary level, as the program is written to meet Arizona teacher certification requirements at the secondary level (grades 7-12).

REQUIRED COURSES FROM MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

16 semester credit hours in music theory and aural perception

6 semester credit hours in music theory

7 semesters of private lessons and ensemble work

4 semesters of piano proficiency

6 semester credit hours in music theory

10 semester credits in music methods

7 semesters of private lessons and ensemble work, 1 semester of piano and 1 semester of voice OR

2 semesters of regular piano and 1 semester of jazz piano
