MUS 5900 JAZZ IMPROVISATION, THEORY AND PRACTICE (3)

A systematic approach to the art of jazz improvisation. Emphasis upon performance as well as analysis. This course will use a hands-on study of the harmonic, melodic, and formal structures of jazz music as they are applied to improvisation including chord/scale relationships, harmony, voice-leading, and reharmonization.

MUS 5901 JAZZ REPERTOIRE FOR LARGE AND SMALL ENSEMBLES (3)

Specializes in the study of performance techniques, with specific emphasis on prominent repertory. This course will include extensive listening and analysis.

MUS 5902 GRADUATE JAZZ PEDAGOGY I: HORNS AND RHYTHM SECTION (3)

This course is designed to develop skills in the teaching of jazz and commercial music. Students will be exposed to a variety of materials, techniques, and philosophies and trained in various methods of rehearsing and conducting jazz ensembles large and small. Students will develop an understanding of the idiom specific requirements of horns and rhythm section instruments to the point that they can demonstrate.

MUS 5903 GRADUATE JAZZ PEDAGOGY II: HORNS AND RHYTHM SECTION (3)

This course is designed to continue to develop skills in the teaching of jazz and commercial music. MUS 5904 JAZZ ARRANGING FOR EDUCATORS (3)

This course will expose students to common jazz arranging skills for both small and large jazz ensembles. Adapting charts is commonplace within the idiom and this course will demystify some of the practices necessary to create unique experiences for the students and director. This course will additionally provide the student with the ability to overcome ensemble personnel challenges.
